As far as I know this is the oldest of all space mission pin badges. I was made in the Soviet Union in the 1950's to celebrate the success of sputnik 1. It has clear blue and red enamels, which were common in the 1950's but had largely disappeared by 1960 in favour of opaque enamels.
- The badge face is 2.1cm in diameter and has a safety clasp fastener to the rear and details a fairly accurate likeness of Sputnik. Later Soviet space mission pin badges would often resort to representing a space probe by using a red star or a sci-fi style rocket since actual knowledge of the spacecraft was quite secret.
- These pin aren't super rare yet, since many were produced for a country in nationwide celebration, but they are getting rarer. I see around 4 or 5 of these in a year and there used to be many more 10 years ago.
