Scouting Soviet Style

Back in 1917 many scout leaders found themselves on the wrong side of the Communist revolution. With them gone, politicians introduced a youth organisation more in line with Communism. With the slogan 'ALWAYS READY!' and the flames of revolution above, the Pioneer organisation was born for youths aged 9-14.

Over time similar organisations would emerge in the East, though not all were as politically active as their Soviet counterparts.

At 15 years old pioneers would typically have to progress to a more adult politically aligned organisation if they hoped to go to university, secure a good job or be allocated state housing.
