A very pretty, 1960's, gold coloured, metal pin badge from former Czechoslovakia.
The badge face is 1.8cm high and has a long stick pin style fastener to the rear.
The picture displays a clock face and the text Clock/Watchmakers Union Prague.
Historical Background
The Czech lands have a very long tradition in building various timekeeping devices – the famous astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall, set into operation in 1410, is still working with the original movement.
The history of watchmaking in East Bohemia began in 1889. In this year, Gustav Becker’s company from Lower Silesia established a branch in Broumov to manufacture clocks. The plant was recorded in the commercial register in 1890 as an independent enterprise and was bought out in 1930 by Junghans. It then became part of the Chronotechna national enterprise in 1948.
The modern watchmaking industry emerged from the ruins of the original German factories back in 1946. It was for this purpose, the Chronotechna national enterprise, based in Liberec, was established. A branch of the Chronotechna national enterprise was opened in Nové Mesto nad Metují in 1949, which was commissioned with introduction of production of Czech wristwatches.
This plant has held the ELTON name since 1969 and has been an independent enterprise since. The current ELTON hodinárská joint stock company is the legal successor of the original ELTON national enterprise and continues with the watchmaking tradition here.
