Founding: Established on October 3, 1945, at the World Trade Union Congress in Paris, France.
-
Purpose: Created as a global international trade union confederation to unite trade unions worldwide after World War II.
-
Cold War Split: During the Cold War, ideological friction—particularly over the U.S. Marshall Plan—led non-communist/reformist unions to split and form the rival International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) in 1949. The FSM subsequently aligned more closely with the Soviet bloc.
-
Headquarters: Originally based in Paris, then Vienna, and later in Prague (Czechoslovakia) from 1956 until 2005. Its current headquarters are located in Athens, Greece.
