The number 13 refers to March 13, 1957, a pivotal day in the history of the Cuban Revolution.On this date, Echeverría (who was the president of the Federation of University Students) led a dramatic, multi-pronged assault in Havana against the authoritarian regime of Fulgencio Batista. The operation included:
- An armed assault on the Presidential Palace to assassinate Batista.
- The simultaneous capture of the Radio Reloj radio station by Echeverría, where he broadcast a premature announcement of Batista's overthrow to the public.
The attack failed, and Echeverría was shot and killed by police later that afternoon during clashes near the University of Havana. He became one of the most prominent martyrs of the revolutionary movement, and March 13 remains an officially recognized anniversary of remembrance in Cuba. - It is 2.5cm high and has a safety clasp style fastener to the rear.
