- This is a very pretty 1961, Vostok 2 pin badge celebrating the successful launch of the rocket. A gold coloured metal badge, the badge face is 1.8cm wide and has a clasp style fastener to the rear. Featuring the text CCCP and the text BOCTOK II in Russian.
An interesting pin badge because the design of the spacecraft on the face of the badge is a science fiction inspired representation.
The vostok program was surrounded by such secrecy that almost no one knew what the actual space rockets looked like. Even journalists of the time were illustrating the spacecraft as stars or doves of peace.
- Vostok 2 was a Soviet space mission which carried cosmonaut Gherman Titov into orbit for a full day in order to study the effects of a more prolonged period of weightlessness on the human body.
Unlike Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1, Titov took manual control of the spacecraft for a short while and managed not to crash it into anything.
The flight was an almost complete success, marred only by a bout of space sickness, a malfunctioning heater that allowed the inside temperature to drop to 6.1 °C (43 °F), and a troublesome re-entry when the re-entry module failed to separate cleanly from its service module.
Titov remains the youngest person to reach space. He was a month short of 26 years old at launch.
